Chapter 11

WHAT DO YOU DO after being raped? She didn’t know. On autopilot, she stumbled to her truck and drove home. She didn’t know what else to do. Reporting it would only bring a litany of questions she wasn’t prepared to answer. She could not account for her role in the fucking diabolical disaster. She had to cope and live with it. How hard could that be? She never was like any other woman she’d known. Always colder, more ruthless and easily divorced of her emotions. Even from Quinn sometimes. Why couldn’t this be part of it? It could. It would. It had to be. Forever.

Forever.

She nodded to herself as if confirming a blood oath, eternally establishing the reality of what happened here. Nothing. Ever. Happened.

She entered her apartment. Thank God, Rose was sound asleep. Thank God, the fucker was considerate enough to use a condom. She could just pretend nothing happened. She stepped into the shower, acting out every cliché of every rape movie she’d ever watched. Crying more. Scrubbing his damn stench from her body. Wishing she could scrub her brain as easily as she washed herself. She didn’t look down. She might never dare to look down again. Never shy of her body, she always considered it another part of her and as anything else, something that needed to be nurtured.

Now that area could shrivel up and die and she’d only cheer it on.

She wrapped the towel around her body. Bruises were already shadowing her arms, as well as places on her back, butt and hips. She had to cancel seeing Quinn. Postpone it as long as possible, until they all faded. No one else had any reason to see her. She could hide herself without too many questions.

In the medicine cabinet, she found some leftover pain killers that Rose hadn’t taken after a dental procedure. She took them into her bedroom, downing way too many to be safe. She pulled the oversized sweats and a hoodie onto her body. She couldn’t put on underwear for the pain. Curling up on her bed, she didn’t shut her eyes but stared forward. She didn’t move. Sandpaper lined her eyelids. Sure. They were all but bruised from so much crying. Finally, she got her nerve up and called her dad’s cell phone and left a message that she was sick and wouldn’t be in tomorrow. She told him she’d be sick for a while.

Later, when her body no longer showed any evidence of what happened, she’d train her brain not to remember. She’d refuse to talk about it or allow anything to trigger it or any other stupid reaction that would only suck her back into the pain. She wasn’t a rape victim. She almost spat out the word. No. Laughing bitterly, she dropped back to her pillow. She orgasmed during the ordeal. Like it was some kind of lurid foreplay designed to heighten her senses. What the fuck was wrong with her? And what the fuck did her body find to enjoy? Being brutally torn in half? That’s how it felt.
